The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the world as we know it. What hasn’t changed is that all of us have a duty of care to others, whether it’s as a company to all stakeholders, or each of us to our colleagues, friends and family.

Giving effect to that duty of care means doing everything we can to establish COVID-Security and COVID-safe workplaces.

If businesses can establish COVID-Security and thereby provide COVID-safe workplaces, they can get back to work and help get the economy back on track.

Covid-Security

The challenge from a business perspective is how to responsibly establish Covid-Security whilst remaining effective?

Current best practice is to establish Covid-Security by respecting rules of engagement.  The rules of engagement are evolving but a current summary includes:

  • Maintaining social distance – to ensure your workforce stays 2 metres apart as much as possible
  • Working remotely where possible – to minimise travel, the load on public transport and employee density
  • Staggering key times – to help maintain social distancing, smooth the load on transport infrastructure and reduce employee density
  • Cohorting – keeping groups of workers working together in teams that are as small as possible to reduce opportunities for cross-infection
  • Restricting use of equipment to members of a cohort – to reduce opportunities for infection to spread to other teams
  • Using stairs in preference to lifts
  • Increasing the frequency of cleaning procedures, pausing work in the day if necessary
  • Washing hands at key moments, e.g. each time before and after operating machinery – to reduce the opportunities for infections to spread
  • Improving ventilation
  • Issuing (and recording) reminders on the above rules of engagement and to remind staff to only come into work if well and no one in their household is self-isolating

In addition, the government acknowledges:

  • There won’t be enough public transport options for people to return to work
  • Many workers will face problems with childcare; and
  • To the extent that some industries will reopen – such as construction and perhaps some forms of hospitality, any increase in the rate of infection could see the brakes applied quickly.

That being the case, the agility and flexibility of any measures deployed to help will be key.

The challenge is how do we remain effective in such circumstances?
